about the only thing that could be causing this is a Head Gasket leak, or a crack in either the head or the block. somplace where the Water Jacket is close to the cylinder. This one's going to have to come apart. Start with taking the heads off. when you get them off look for rust stains when you are scraping off the head gaskets. This will tell you if the head gasket is the culpret. If you don't find an obvious point of entry for the water, take both heads and get them to a machine shop to have them pressure tested. If its not the heads, then it's off to the block, and so on and so on... for a 55... I'd rebuild the motor anyway... but thats just me.
