1)Trying replace them myself using used parts (I will need to tow the car later to a dealer to reprogram immobilizer). I have been looking online and found out that they are rarely sold on their own but usually with the whole streering columns. The columns are really specific - MT or AT, w/o cruize or w cruize, w/o fogs or w fogs. But how specific is the lock housing with the lock cylinder, pin actuator and the switch and how specific is the immobilizer?

I found a combination of all the parts I need on eBay (my only find!) and there the seller says that it fits a really wide range of cars (not only neons). He confirmed it in personal message. I'm still a little suspicious. I want to get an independent opinion here.

2)I asked at a dealership if they can reprogram used immobilizers. They told me sometimes there are problems with it but they did not tell how likely is this "sometime" to happen. Does any body here know?

3)The old immobilizer has the antenna loop broken off. There were attempts to start the car without that loop. If I glue the loop back to immobilizer box and properly solder thing copper wires in it should the immobilizer start to work again theoretically? Or it gets re-set or blocked when this kind of mechanical damage happens to it? Or it is likely to have software glitch in this kind of situation? It is tricky to solder the wires back together so i want to know whether it is worth the attempt.

Thank you!

OK. After my questions the eBay seller corrected description of that part. The switch is the only part of it which so unversal. About the rest he is not sure.

But still if I buy a steering column which differs only by presence/absence of fog-lights or/and cruize control whould that matter?

I think you're approaching the whole problem the wrong way and you are likely inviting more problems than you already have. I suggest you get the problem diagnosed properly and replace only the component required. It could also be an issue with wiring and not a part problem at all.

Well all those things are broken mechanically. So the problem is pretty obvious and no special diagnostics is required unless there are extra problems. Letting dealership to do all the work would the easiest but way but I think I could save some money by changing at least the housing with the lock cylinder, the pin actuator and the switch. This is not hard at all. I could also probably keep the old cylinder -- it seems to have only mechanical damage. Immobilizer is questionable. But if it comes with the steering column anyways than why not to changing? The only concern is that if they try to reprogram the used one and it does not work then they will end up buying a new one and double charge for programming (I'm not sure they would do it tthough but they may)

Those are the risks you take when you deal on E-bay or Craigslist.

If an ebay seller sold several hundred items and has good rating the risk is too high. ... as long as I buy stuff according to specifications. I could wait a couple of week until my exact sub-sub-model shows up there. I don't need to fix the car urgently. But may it does not matter anyways so why wait? What is the difference in ignition locks for the same submodel with or without fog lights? I can imagine controls are different - the one with fog-lights might have a switch turning them on and off at least. But the lock?
