I have 383 stroker popping in the carb and exhaust. It has a 600cfm holley on it accelerates great at times but at other times it starts popping through exhaust. I was wondering if it may be a bad power valve in the carb or plug firing just once in awhile.

if its a newer model holley carburetor they all come with a power valve blowout protection. while anything is possible you would really need to make some big noise coming up through the throat of the carb.

i had the same problem on my 70 mustang with a 351 cleveland and a 600cfm holley vac secondaries

a constant popping and backfiring is usually a sign of the dizzy being 180 out. but you say yours will run fine most of the time so your fine there.

check and double check your timing first. i pulled my dizzy and reinstalled to make sure i didnt skip a tooth in either direction (advanced or retarded).

then i had to adjust my carb.
get the car completely level and set both primary and secondary floats (you want to just see the fuel touching the bottom threads on the sight hole.

using the fast idle adjustment set your idle to your engine specs according to your trans usually 850 is good for manual

then with a vaccuum gage adjust your lean/idle screws on the primary metering block to achieve the highest vacuum reading. this is a long tedious process of adjusting and lowering the idle back and forth but dont skimp out on it

if that doesnt help you need to start looking at your accelorator pump circuit.
inside the primary barrells in the middle you will see a big phillips head srew and a cylinder with two nipples pointing into each of the two barrels. this is your accelorator discharge nozzle. they are measured by the diameter of the orafice in the nozzle. stock i beleive is a 28.

if you goto summit you can buy a kit with a variety of sizes. you probably need a 30 or 32.

also buy an assortment of accelorator pump cams. when you depress the pedal, these cams located on the drivers side of the carb on the throttle linkage control the timing of the fuel squirt into the carb.

this is what helped mine. if i had to guess i think i had an extreme lean condition because the discharge nozzle was too small and starving the motor of fuel giving me that POP when i really got on it.
