2014 Jeep Patriot shaking only when idle and in gear Sign In

Automatic 4x4

As the title says, when the car is idling while in drive there is a very noticeable shake, the intensity seems to vary with no rhyme or reason, but some days it's so intense you can literally see the hood vibrating. Others it's more internal but still noticeable. No noticeable issues while driving, just when sitting at a stop light, for instance.

Now before you say engine mounts, let me stop you right there and say we've had the mounts replaced TWICE over the past 3 months due to this issue.

Long story short, problem started within the last 6 months, got progressively worse, took it in 2-3 months ago, initially 3/4 mounts were replaced, problem was better at first but persisted, it got worse again, took it somewhere else, they put in 4 brand new factory mounts, issue seemed better for about 2 days, then came back in full force today.

Interesting observation: The intensity of the vibration seems to be affected by turning the AC on/off. There is a noticeable shake either way, but if the AC is on for instance, the car is shaking, and I turn the AC off, you can actually hear some sort of change happening, the shaking decreases briefly, and then returns. Turn the AC back on, same thing - can physically feel/hear the vibrating decrease, then it comes back.

No shaking at all while in park, reverse, or neutral.

We plan to take it to a transmission place next. However we are undecided if we should keep the new mounts ($1100) or have the old ones put back in. The new mounts didn't seem to help, but there is a benefit to definitively knowing there are 4 new factory mounts in there...

Any ideas or feedback would be appreciated, have been dealing with this issue for months, have had 3 sets of mechanics look at it (including the dealer) and the mounts replaced twice, it has become a huge headache and source of stress so am open to any ideas at this point.

Thanks!

Why the concentration on mounts? Are they broken or not?
If this has been beaten up badly or bent from some serious off roading IDK why it isn't noticed doing mounts?

That or a string of bad luck to isolate the issue so far it seems like it can't hold or self adjust a proper idle in range it would run rough, throw codes and fix from there.

Did anything happen to this accident or trauma wise? That's damage.
Bet codes if just how engine runs would lead to intake issues IDK until you know engine is plain running properly first,

Tom

This engine has a balance shaft that is driven by a timing chain. There is also a recall for the balance shaft module. If this recall was performed and not timed correctly it will cause an engine vibration.

If the recall hasn't been performed, then it needs to be. It may or may not resolve your problem.

Concentration on mounts is because this is the #1 symptom for damaged or faulty engine mounts. We've had 3 sets of mechanics look at, including the dealer, and all concluded it was mounts, hence having them replaced twice.

One theory I have is because engine mounts are the obvious answer, they haven't put as much effort into checking other potential issues. The last group said they did a special sort of test that is specifically to test engine mounts, and determined it was the engine mounts, so they put in 4 new factory ones, and the problem persists.

No accidents or trauma, no crazy speeding or harsh turning. Worst thing I've done was maybe 1-2 years ago I had to slam the brakes to avoid running through a yellow light that I thought I could catch but someone else turned. That did cause an issue ("stuttering" when I would brake, which we resolved). But other than that, nothing major stands out, and this only started sometime in the last 6ish months. I thought maybe I was imagining it at first until it got to the point I could physically see the hood shake, which is when I concluded it definitely wasn't just me.

Now this is interesting. We bought the car from a used dealership in 2016, so I'd imagine the recall had been performed. However we've since learned that dealership sucks and is super shady, so you might be onto something about it not being done properly, which would also explain why nobody has found it yet because it's kind of a random cause.

Something else I came across was problems with the AC compressor/belt which is apparently connected to the engine, and could explain the shift when turning the AC on/off.

Will definitely keep this in mind though, thanks

That's normal. The AC always adds additional load to the engine which will exaggerate the symptom.

DGGR: I was beating on how many times "mounts" were blamed and each time didn't solve anything - definition of insanity is doing the same thing all the time and expecting different results.

No argument my approach to issues/problems with a thing, vehicle starts with ground zero. Rule out basics and move on.

Mounts are not that sensitive TMK worst issue was nuke powered stuff and wild abuse. Still stayed in relative place by metal, still do the rubber let go. Oil if old would take out some - not this.

It's frustrating 3 shops all are wrong? Maybe? Stinks but some of this seen in person is always going to be the rule not the web and welcome here but I can't beat being there seeing it, feeling it then testing why.

3 failures with in person checks and work as a result is inexcusable to me - it's personal. Get an issue (any) fix it or say it's outside of my area to find source reason, then the fix.

I can't beat and is many sign off suggestion that we can't compete with actual inspection by professionals apparently you've just not found one yet?

Tom
