hi, I'm trying to find out information about my Mazda 2's shift knob that basically came apart a few days ago. I took it to a dealer service department and they told me I needed to replace the entire "shifter assembly" whatever that is, nothing related to the term comes up when I search. The car otherwise operates and engages is gear just fine, the main source of my concern is this white plastic piece (see photos) that has become removable, it clearly has a thread for something but in the metal shaft of the gear shift there is nothing but a spring which I use the white rod to depress to move the stick into gear. The dealer service department claims this repair will cost $356 total w/labor. I'd like to know the exact proper parts to search for and maybe be able to order them online for less and bring them in and only pay labor and possibly save some $$$ because the cars is unfortunately out of any warranties.

If the dealer says it comes as part of the shifter, then that's the way it is sold. The dealer will be the only place you can buy this. You won't find it online. It's just not an aftermarket part. You might find a used one in the junkyard but that may be worse than the one you have.
