When you apply the emergency brake, the rear calipers are 'supposed' to 'ratchet' to take up any possible adjustment. On some vehicles, I've been successful by applying the foot brake and pumping the emergency brake pedal. You may want to get the rear brakes inspected. The pads may be worn too far for the ratchet assembly to function. Could be a rusted cable or components?
