2008 Dodge Dakota/3.7 liter V6
35k miles
My father in-law purchased this truck about a year ago and the past few months it has started revving up while he's stopped at a light or a stop sign. The rpm's get all the way up 3500 sometimes and this only happens while the truck is in drive. He has to stomp down on the brake to keep it from launching into the back of somebody or into traffic. It may not happen for a week or it could happen several times in a day of driving. He's about 800 miles till his warranty is up and the service manager at the dodge dealership says the fuel system needs to be flushed. A friend of mine thinks its the idle air control valve/motor. My in-law is on a fixed income and doesnt have much money to begin with. Other than the engine revving up on occasion the truck runs perfectly. Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated. ak; The majority of idle quality issues turn out to be dirty/sticky IAC issues. The IAC (idle air control) is an electrically controlled solenoid that opens/closes very rapidly to control the amount of air going into the throttle body, thereby controlling idle speed. 99% of the time, they can be just cleaned. The fuel injection system needs to be cleaned, periodically. My shop recommends 30-40K mile intervals. This service includes manual cleaning of the IAC, MAF (if used), and throttle body. The actual cleaning of the injectors, intake, ect. is done with a machine, under pressure. Most shops use a MotorVac machine to do this. Going cost is around $90. in our area. Most customers will notice an increase in performance and fuel economy.
There are other possibilities, of course, as to the cause of the idle issue. If any trouble codes were retrieved, post them for us.
