I have a vibration or loud rumbling in what I think are my brakes when idle. When I let off the brakes the vibration stops. I took my car to the dealership for repair and they said I needed both front and rear brakes so they replaced them. The vibration is still there though. It is worrisome since my car is relatively new, 48,000 miles. I told the service person I was surprised I needed brakes so soon! It does not do it every time so hard to point out. I also noticed a clicking occasionally when backing up.

Well, it's certainly the brakes then. Sound like possibly bad motor mounts transmitting engine vibration through the car. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

There was a typo there. I meant it is certainly NOT the brakes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

To add a guess: If this can happen with still car not in gear the brake booster may cause engine to run poorly confusing the issue. If only when in gear I don't think brakes alone are causing the engine vibration if it is that at all?? T

I don't think the brakes have anything at all to do with it beyond just holding the car still when in gear. You can try having someone sit in the car holding the brfake in gear and a second person get a floor jack with a block of wood under the oil pan and apply just enough pressure to take the engine weight off the mounts. If the vibration goes away, the problem is the mounts.
