2007 Ford Taurus possible fuel pump failure?

What are the symptoms of a fuel pump failure in a 2007 Ford Taurus SE (6 cylinder)? Yesterday, after starting up the car, it was running rough (first time it's ever done that since we've had it), then it stalled & wouldn't start back up again. It would crank (starter & battery are all fine, etc), but it's acting like it's not getting any fuel, and won't actually start. My husband says he can't hear the fuel pump engage when he turns the key on (do newer cars like the 2007 taurus make that tell-tale noise a fuel pump makes?), so he thinks it's the fuel pump. Or could it be the fuel filter? It has over 67,000 miles on the vehicle, and I don't think the filter's ever been changed. What about any sort of fuse or switch or other computer/electrical thing? How difficult is it to change the filter and/or pump? Are any special tools needed? My husband looked under the car, and is afraid he doesn't have the tools needed. Can anyone say step by step how to replace a filter and/or pump? We can't afford to pay a mechanic, so having my husband be able to do this on his own would be a blessing. Also, are there any repair manuals available for the 2007 taurus? If so, where can I get/buy one?

The symptoms of a bad fuel pump is low/no fuel pressure. You can't know anything without using a fuel pressure gauge and knowing the specification for that car. The pump is inside the fuel tank so the tank has to be removed to access it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
