2007 Dodge Charger 3.5L Engine Noise
|

2007 Dodge Charger 3.5L V6 High Output Engine 65K Miles Car developed a fairly severe intermittent knock after a high engine rpm pass on the road. The noise appears to be coming from the drivers side valve train area on top of the engine. It is not a tick. Engine starts and idles smoothly. I checked timing and compression and everything checks out perfect. I thought it might be a collapsed lash adjuster on a rocker arm and have inspected and even replaced different rocker arms that appeared to be partially collapsed but otherwise looked fine. I think the noise sounds too loud to be a lash adjuster but I can't think of anything else. The cam looks fine and nothing looks out of place. The rocker shafts are secure and are not turning. I hate to remove the head, but may have too. The sound really seems like its coming from under the plastic valve covers. One odd thing though, when I checked timing, I found it was timed to TDC on number one cylinder on the exhaust stroke, not the intake stroke. It's exactly 180 out. I've not seen this before but the factory service manual doesn't specify intake or exhaust stroke. Any suggestions? Here are two links to my videos of the engine starting and idling briefly...once again, it's intermittent...sometimes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXYVagz16Bs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPQ8QzzhKVs Tim

You should start your own thread, so you can get emails to responses you receive. This thread is pretty old, so it is going to get locked. From listening to the noise in the video I would say that is rod knock. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
