My 2006 pt cruiser turbo has 86,000 miles. I put non-studded snow tires on it the end of september as I needed tires, and I didn't want to pay for a new set and had two new snow tires in my barn, so I put them on my car. Les Schwab told me it would not hurt the car. Immediately I began to notice a lot of road noise. I went to Les Schwabs and they told me that all four tires were wearing evenly and that the road noise I heard was the two front snow tires. However, coming home tonight, there was not only the road noise from the front tires, but a whining sound, like a torked belt or something. Do you have a clue what I'm dealing with? I am a 62 year old woman who doesn't understand cars, help!

SNOW TIRES! Oh my - been ages as the "all season" tires seemed to take over and I live in a known snow belt. I don't suggest just any old snow tire for front wheels and some don't do well at steering vs the all season tires. Also don't like snow tires at all on the front unless there's a specific reason like severe hills where you are. Studs are only useful for ice and not that much IMO.

The noise could be that some with the best traction don't concentrate on "quiet" also and the "knobbier" the better for plain out of a ditch traction.

I plow snow so have all four wheels with real snow tires on a truck. They are quiet at highway speeds on a good road if you can find one in this state but were new when I got that truck and they stink for traction!

If you must for real traction I'd get plain steel wheels and have them separate from regular tires for seasonal use.

The noise if a growl and hmmm on dry smooth roads may be normal depending on those tires. They also should be the correct size and if not they really should go for new tires and being a FWD you should do fine for traction for plowed road but still snow covered. A PT cruiser IMO is not what I would own in known snow belt areas of which there are plenty,

T
