Hello all!!!!got a 2005 ford f-150 4x4 with a steering effort problem. the truck only has 41k on it and was bought used by my customer. His complaint is that the steering seems hard to return after going around a corner and he has to correct his steering constantly while driving straight. It has rack and pinion so a frozen stabalizer is out of the question. After a road test ,I suspect a frozen steering shaft u-joint ? It feels loose...tight...loose...tight...loose tight when turning the wheel.A visual of the two lower u-joints shows lots of rust! Any Ford guys out there see this as a common ford truck problem ? Also the truck sits for sometimes weeks . Thanx .....Dr.Dale

Not Fords especially but I've seen it happen on a few other cars. It should be easy enough to disconnect and check it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanx HT.....I have the truck scheduled for next week to take a closer look...I guess I'm just poking arround at this being a "common ford truck problem" as I've test driven a few others recently for different complaints and noticed the same steering performance issues in different degrees....some harder to steer than others.

about %90 chance it's the steering shaft u-joint, they are quite common in that era.

I would pump grease in the joints, I think as you drive it it will free up.

They don't have grease fittings and they can't be disassembled. It is replaced as a unit.
