hi i have a 2005 dodge neon sxt with 42000 miles on it and a boatload of problems. To start i had an overheating issue a month ago and brought it to my dealer and they couldnt find anything wrong so they changed the fluids and sent me away. Everything was fine for 3 weeks until the car overheated again. The car began to heat up quickly and the needle on the tempature gauge would go up and down but only in city traffic the highway would remain normal tempature. I also noticed that the car would make bubbling noises and an occasional grinding noise when i shut it off. The gauge would also redline and then go back down when i began driving but it would only get me so far until it began to overheat for good. I took it to the dealer and replaced the thermostat and the housing for it which they said was the problem. today i got my car back and it sputters when it starts and requires alot of time to get it started. I have to give it some gas to get it going and evn that takes awhile. I also hear the same bubbling noises when i shut the car off and i also noticed the tempature gauge went up aftr i shut the car off. If anyone knows whats wrong i wuld extremely appreciate the help. thank You

It sounds like your cooling fans aren't coming on. Let the car idle with the hood open and see if they come on when it's getting hot. Make sure to check the coolant level when it's cold before you start running it.

Since it took 3 weeks to act up when you got it back, I suspect a slow leak in the system somewhere. This could have very easily developed into a blown head gasket if it was overheated in the process. Once you get some air pockets in the cooling system, they are very difficult to get out and will cause the erratic temp swings you are seeing.
The system should be very thoroughly pressure tested now to determine any pressure loss.
