2005 VW needs new motor?

Make: Volkswagen
Model: Jetta
Engine: 2.5L (Manual)
Milage: 62K
About a week ago the check engine light came on in my car. As the week progressed the idle of the car got progressively shakier. I was hoping to make it to the weekend to get it in because I work two jobs but I didn't make it that far. The car wouldn't start yesterday (luckily I was only a couple blocks from home). We got it towed to a local shop that I trust and they finally got back to me today. I guess the motor needs to be replaced.
I know a lot about a lot of things and I'm an educated woman but cars don't fall into my things I know a lot about. What's the difference between the engine and motor? They also sounded confused as to why it happened and said that "over-revving" might have had something to do with it. (However by now I'm really distracted by the $4000 estimate that I'm only picking out words from the conversation).
Can anyone help clarify this for me? Is this something that is my fault? I thought that I took really good care of my car... and if it is something that I did, I'd like to know what it is so I don't do it again!

The words "Engine" and "Motor" got all confused over a hundred years ago and get used interchangably. An engine is a power source, power plant and originally "motor" was reserved for electric and some other "motors" -- makes calling a car company Motor company seem stupid IMO as they concentrate on engines! No matter - it's clear by the price you are talking about an engine replacement.
What you need to find out is WHY THE HECK THIS NEW AND LOW MILE CAR NEEDS A WHOLE ENGINE??!!
It can happen that small parts break and cause a total disaster but get some diagnosis and explained in plain English.
Hey - this is too big of a deal not to know just what went wrong and why. Check for recalls or some reason why this could be such a disaster so quickly,
