While going to work my car started this jerking and lost power at about 40 mph and almost cut out. I got the car back home and shut down and noticed some steam coming from the overflow tank, the fluid was reddish brown. What could be the problem as this has never happened until now.

Check engine light on? Did you notice by the temperature gauge if the engine was overheating? Remove the radiator cap and check the level of fluid in the radiator. The fluid shouldn't be that color unless you have rust in the system or the coolant is contaminated with something.
