2005 Mitsubishi Galant Dies after A/C Service...Please help!!! Sign In

I have a 2005 mitsubishi galant 2.4l with 103k miles. Took it to get A/C compressor to be replaced. Once we drove off the shop, within a mile the car died on will not start. The fuel pump, timing, and spark are all fine. The is no water or coolant in the oil. Compression test on all cylinders is zero. It strike me very strangely as the car had no issue what so ever and it was maintained very well. Any help will be appreciated.

Low or no compression is probably the result of a mechanical timing problem, such as a broken timing belt.

And a broken timing belt on that engine will pretty much mean a new engine or a repair that approaches that in cost. It's an interference engine meaning it will bend valve the second the engine rotates with a broken belt.

IMO that was bum luck on the timing belt at service for A/C which shouldn't be involved. Have to pay strict attention to that belt or risk the whole engine in seconds as HT already said,

The timing belt interval is 105,000 miles or 7 years. Which ever comes first.

If the belt did end up snapping, the tensioner failed, or some type of sprocket key way failure occurred, it would probably be a coincidence that it happened after an ac repair because replacing the compressor doesn't require removing any of the timing components.

If it was a crank key way failure, that could be because someone had the crank pulley off and didn't tighten the pulley bolt to specifications. With the new compressor installed and putting more load on a crank pulley and crank sprocket that was chucking from being loose and damaging the key way, the compressor drag could of finished it off. This is all from my wild imagination because you won't know what really happened until things are inspected.

As said, could and probably is coincidence. I'd give the shop the benefit of the doubt as they weren't working on anything related to your timing. But I question your compression test results. Even a motor blown to hell doesn't read zero on all cylinders. Make sure the gauge is good and then get readings.
