I am looking to purchase a 2005 Jeep Liberty, and the particular one I like has a black buildup or burnt oil or something like that all inside the tailpipe. Is this normal?

Thanks!!

There is no smoke, and the oil looks normal. It has about 40,000 miles.

Thanks!!!!

That's a neat reminder of some older ways to tell about an engine!

Yes and No??

It's not really expected to be sparkling clean but I wouldn't think or say sooty is right. Kinda would need to see that in person and would still wonder some.

Perhaps make your deal contingent upon an exhaust gas analysis but before that if all else seems fine make an arrangement to check the vehicle again when stone cold like an overnite. Check underhood for evidence of it having been run before you start it first for the day and you'll know how well it really starts and runs cold AND have a chance to see if there's visable black or blue smoke out tailpipe at start up. In cold weather there is some steam which is normal in certain conditions as you should have seen before - I'm talking BLACK (too much fuel) or BLUE (oil does that) smoke puffs or any rough running. Hate to start off with any problems - enough happens anyway.

If dealer or private sale then insist on an independant check at a place of your choice. That's a good idea anyway for used car buying,
