2004
Saturn
Ion
?
~110,000 miles

So recently my car has had some issues starting. When I put the key in, it won't turn at all. After quite a few tries it'll eventually turn and start fine as if nothing happened. Some times it'll only take 10 tries, sometimes it takes a minute worth of tries before it'll actually turn. It's also worth mentioning that I can't shift to neutral until the car has started properly. The steering wheel is fine, turns without a problem.

I don't know much if anything about cars, I haven't tried to fix anything yet as I'd like some input from you guys before I blow money trying to fix something that isn't broken. If there is anything else you'd like to know just ask. Please and thank you in advance.

You have several open recalls and one of them involves your ignition lock cylinder. You should head on down to your dealer and have those recalls performed. You don't pay anything for that.

VIN: 1G8AN12FX4Z230217
Year: 2004 Make: Saturn Model: Saturn Ion Number of Open Recalls: 3 NHTSA Recall Number: opens new window takes away from VIN lookup section> 14V047Recall Date: March 4, 2014

Manufacturer Recall Number: N140063

SUMMARY:General Motors is recalling model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
SAFETY RISK:If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. REMEDY: Dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Please contact your local GM Certified Service Dealer to order parts or visit www.gmignitionupdate.com for additional information.

RECALL STATUS:Recall INCOMPLETE

MANUFACTURER NOTES: Visit manufacturer website at https://my.gm.com/recalls for more information. This recall data last refreshed:May 30, 2015 NHTSA Recall Number: opens new window takes away from VIN lookup section> 14V171Recall Date: April 3, 2014

Manufacturer Recall Number: N140113

SUMMARY:General Motors is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.

SAFETY RISK:If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries. REMEDY: Dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut two ignition/door keys and relearn keys, if necessary for each vehicle free of charge. Please contact your local GM Certified Service Dealer to order parts or visit www.gmignitionupdate.com for additional information.

RECALL STATUS:Recall INCOMPLETE

MANUFACTURER NOTES: Visit manufacturer website at https://my.gm.com/recalls for more information. This recall data last refreshed:May 30, 2015 NHTSA Recall Number: opens new window takes away from VIN lookup section> 14V153Recall Date: April 21, 2014

Manufacturer Recall Number: N140115

SUMMARY:General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in some 2009-2010 model year Chevrolet HHR (non-turbo), some 2010 model year Chevrolet Cobalt, all 2004-2007 model year Saturn ION vehicles equipped with electric power steering (EPS), and service parts installed into vehicles under safety recall 10023 (10V073) prior to May 31, 2010. The subject vehicles equipped with EPS may experience a sudden loss of power steering assist that could occur at any time while driving.

SAFETY RISK:If the power steering assist is lost, a message is displayed on the Driver Information Center and a chime sounds to inform the driver. Steering control can be maintained, as the vehicle will revert to a manual steering mode, but would require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds, which could result in an increased risk of a crash.

REMEDY: Dealers are to replace the power steering motor free of charge.

RECALL STATUS:Recall INCOMPLETE

MANUFACTURER NOTES: Visit manufacturer website at https://my.gm.com/recalls for more information.

Re: 2004 Saturn Ion Issues Starting Sign In

Thanks! I've heard of Saturns having recalls in the past but never experienced issues until now and never considered getting it checked just in case (probably a stupid decision.) I'll get it checked out and hopefully that should fix it, I'll be sure to follow up after the work is done.
