2004 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V 4 Cylinder 2.5 Liter 88,000 miles I got an oil change about 2 months ago. Since then i would estimate I have put about 1200-1500 miles on the car. I checked my oil today and it was very low. I opened up the oil cap and there was smoke coming from where you put in the oil. This seems to be serious, what could be going wrong? (hyperlinks removed)

Inconclusive on smoke in/under oil cap for now. How low was it and what prompted you to check not that you shouldn't periodically anyway? T

It was very low, not much oil on the dipstick actually. I was checking my antifreeze and I figured I might as well check the oil as well. I just thought that it shouldnt be that low considering the fairly recent oil change. I have never really noticed any type of signinifcant oil leakage underneath my car.

The dipstick doesn't indicate the entire amount of oil in the engine. Some could be off of the stick at just a quart and a little low and hold near 5 total. HOW MUCH OIL DID YOU ADD to get it to the "full" mark? T

Coming from experience (I have an 02 spec v) these motors are nortorious for bad headgaskets, screws from the secondary throttle plates in the lower intake loosening up and getting sucked into the cylinder, and finally the deterioration of the pre-cat which is a catalytic converter in the exhaust manifold. The cat starts to break down and material will get sucked back into the engine. This will cause excessive oil consumption which might be your culprit. Google it, there was never a recall issued but I believe their are service bullitens out there __________________________________________________ 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2002 Ford Ranger 2004 Toyota Corolla 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1
