2004 Hyundai Elantra Overheating???

Okay. My Elantra just started this. The last several days the fan has been running from start to stop. Today the temperature near redlined. When I put it into neutral or park it lowers to where it normally should be. Is it a thermostat issues, a coolant temperature sensor, or both. There are no leaks and everything seems fine.

What does your temp read when you first start it up? The fan could just be sensing an A/C request and will run all the time and can do that on defrost mode.
Make sure coolant is full at the radiator not just the recovery tank.
The thermostat may be faulty but shouldn't have anything to do with the fan coming on too early.
If you can temp test this do so. Try asking for heat and see if it's warm and does that lower the temp gauge as neutral does? Neutral is probably cooling better because of lower load and a few more RPMs to move coolant around.
Don't let this overheat if at all possible while trying to figure this out as that can only cause problems you don't want,
