2004 Ford Expedition 5.4 liter 149,000 miles

The compressor went out this summer. we have been having problems even before it went out with it freezing up on long trips. We had it fixed by a Ford dealer in Nevada in July. within a week we starter having issues with freezing up again and not switching from defrost to floor or max ac. We were on vacation and we set it on the regular ac setting and made it back home from vacation. We took it to the local ford dealer who checked it out and they took the dash off found something disconnected, fixed it and it started working again. After about 3 weeks it started freezing up and not diverting right again. We took it back to the local dealer. They drained out all freon and replaced it once they discovered it was low. It worked well for a few weeks and has been having trouble ever since.

What we think is happening is that somewhere down in the dash the air is not being diverting correctly and causing it to freeze up, which may be the initial reason why the compressor went out and had to be replaced. We have spent approximately $2500 having this fixed. Anyone have any ideas or similar situations with Ford Expeditions?

Thank you! Mark

On these ones there is a problem with the evap freezing up after extended driving at freeway speeds. There is a kit that mounts an evap cycling switch on the evap and disables the factory TXV valve. If you've been taking it the dealer I would image they have already installed this kit. If that's the case then there could possibly be some debri left in the system from the prior failure causing the TXV valve to stick. Those can be tricky to deal with especially if there is rear a/c and the system would need to be flushed........ a lot

The TSB # for this 04-5-9. The part #s are 4L1Z-19E992-A for the evap kit & W701696-S301 for the fastener...

The mode doors use vacuum motors to switch modes. It's possible you have a weak motor, cracked line or just a bad vacuum connection..
If you are just having this switch problem under heavy acceleration the easiest fix would be to install a vacuum storage reservior or all the lines would have to be checked & the motors checked to see they can hold vacuum and not leak down.....
