Every time I go to start the car the dash flickers on and off while the cracking of the motor sound like its flapping...What could this be ?

Before you get too excited with this it sounds like a weak battery. If this battery is original it's toast by age alone. Look at driver's door jam for build date and add a month or so and that's about how old an original battery would be.
IMO - a battery (regular lead acid like most cars use) is only dependable for three years! Yes you will hear of 4,5,6 perhaps and that's about it. They lose some % each month of power (amps) available even if they don't pull a total surprise and short out.
If it's been replaced then go thru the checks of battery condition now and if charging system is working properly along with cable connections - both ends of battery cables count!
