2004 Chevrolet Cavalier
~93k Miles

Good evening.

I have a 2004 Chevy Cavalier that I have unfortunately neglected. I am roughly 3k miles past my scheduled oil change, and today, I started having trouble starting the car. Occasionally, it would start for a couple seconds and then stop.
Pushing the gas a little before it had a chance to fail seemed to keep it going every time.

When the car would fail to start, the oil light and check engine light would come on. Whenever the car started successfully, there were no warning lights on.
I checked my oil, and I was at roughly 1/2 max.

As soon as I could get my car to start, I drove directly to AutoZone and filled it (with all warning lights OFF) with 5W-30.
After getting the car started and driving it home, I decided to see how it would start, hoping the new oil had circulated with the old.
The car still had problems starting.

I have read a lot about how important it is to keep oil in the car, that driving with the "low oil" light on could destroy the engine.
Obviously, I will be having the oil changed as soon as it's practical.

Could being 1/2 full on old oil cause this problem?
Could this cause or have been caused by engine damage?

If not, any other ideas? This is my first car, and I'm still making payments on it. I'd hate to think that my ignorance destroyed it.

I just remembered that when the "check oil" and "check engine" lights were on, the battery light was also on. Not sure if that's significant...
