sounds like gear noise, i think it is coming from thr rear differential. whines when i acellerate, and seem to slip or lunge getting on it up ah hill. please help.

The slip or lunge...at very low speed? Should inspect differential gear oil. Look for any 'metallic' particles in oil.
If you can safely do so, jack up the rear wheels and 'feel' for any abnormal resistance or binding while turning the driveshaft. Also, check the wheel bearings for the same feeling.

unfortunately these explorer years 02-05 are known to have differential problems

dmac; Not just the Exploders.Wink In the pre-90's, I hardly ever ran into a bad differential. And, usually when I did, it was because the pinion seal had leaked all of the gear oil and the bonehead kept driving it. In the past ten years, we have done countless differentials. Mostly, GMs. And mostly, teeth missing from the ring and pinion. A few Fords and Dodges. I'm really fortunate to have a tech that spent years at a rebuilder. He's been with me 9 years, now, and he's my left arm. (My son is my right arm...LOL) Many of the shops in the area send their diff. work to us, because of him.
