2003 Volvo S40

So, my battery died and when I went to pop the hood to try to jump it, the hood release didn't seem to work. Sure enough, I go to open the hood and the release hadn't done anything. I know the battery shouldn't have anything to do with the hood release, just bad timing I suppose. Any idea how to open the hood so I can get to the battery?

Have someone bang on the hood near the latch area while you pull the hood release lever?
