2003 Toyota corolla won't start	Sign In

I was getting ready to back up and park my 2003 corolla with 135,000 miles in it and when I tried to put in reverse the gear shift just went loose like if there were no gears. I continue to try but nothing happened. I turn the car off and then it wouldn't start back up. I continue to try putting back on park or neutral to see if I can start it but nothing is happening. The gear shift feels like its not going in gear but it must have gone on park because i was able to pull the keys out of the ignition. Any suggestions?

Inspect the shifter cable at the transmission and at the gear shift lever and see if it popped off. Make sure you chock the wheels because it might not be in park. You don't want your car rolling down the road into the neighbors house.

That's the reason it won't start. It's still in drive or reverse.

This isn't like putting a knob on a dresser drawer. You might have to remove the center console.
