We have a 2003 Ford Taurus that normally gets 22mpg city, but recently, we noticed that we have been filling up more than expected, and when calculated, we are now only getting 13 mpg! The car has never had a day's worth of problems, has near 65k miles, newer tires, no service engine light or hint of misfires. What would cause this dramatic drop in gas mileage? The oil has been changed regularly, and I might imagine that the air filter could use to be replaced possibly, maybe even a fuel filter, but loosing nearly half the normal gas mileage? What might be going on??

Real mpg is hard to know for sure without a running log over several fill ups. Quality new air filters will help but unless an extremely bad old one that's a big change. Are all things the same as when noted before. New driver, extra stops, change of ordinary route - anything? If you use the same gas station try another. Try to fill cars slowly as they will "click" off sooner when full speed filled and the extra gallon or whatever throws off the mpg if another put less in and you put more in the next check. Any chance of theft? Keep a sharp record as if the driving is a routine and that's a real change in mpg something's wrong, T
