2003 Focus needs second wheel bearing replacement after 9000 miles Sign In

My 2003 Ford Focus wagon (100K miles) needs a rear wheel bearing replacement on both sides. The same repair was made nine months ago. Since then there's been 9,000 miles of mostly highway driving. Is this reasonable?

Thanks!

There are a lot of Chinese made junk parts being sold out there. Try to use a quality brand like Timkin, BCA, etc

Good point, but I did not make this repair myself. It was done by my mechanic, for $384. I was wondering whether it was reasonable to ask for a discount this time around.

Couldn't be certain on whether this is pressed in or available as a hub assembly but either way SPECIFY and pay for the bearing name brands HT mentioned. The stupid $20 savings for a Chinese one failing deletes any bargain and VERY common to fail,

It's a hub assembly. However, the question was whether I'd be justified in asking for a discount based on the fact that the last repair only lasted 9,000 miles.

Looked up this one...........

Timken by name and no warranty info on part. Most would only replace a part not any labor.

Timken by name states...........
"
Features & Benefits
Timken provides premium bearings that deliver uncompromising performance. Each part is designed and engineered to match its OE counterpart and is manufactured with the highest quality steel to the highest quality standard. Timken is a leader in all bearing types, including ball, cylindrical, needle, tapered, thrust and spherical."

9 Months is a problem and if not installed properly anything can fail and would hope right away so I think you'll need to negotiate with the shop/tech or place this was done if in fact both have failed.

Can't guess at shop policy on things like this but any fair shop or individual tech if so should take you seriously. If the vehicle was under water (literally) over hubs that could cause good bearings to fail so there's room for reasons for such things.

Believe in good faith both ways with stuff like this. It doesn't reflect well or help anyone for work/parts to fail,

I would expect that the part, at minimum would be covered under warranty, if not the whole job. I would walk in there expecting the whole job to be covered. If he won't cover it, look for another place to have your repairs done.

That is sane advice, at least to begin with. Well said.

I'm with you on this HT. If this was done by me I wouldn't even ask for a receipt that showed exact date and just make it good but was a sole proprietor and could make it right based on what is fair never mind any laws or rules. Parts too. Paid for by the month on long standing accounts and if I said they were bad it flies or there's trouble which NEVER happened.

Just bearings comment: Did all four on a silly trailer 100 miles away on location and could only get cheapo stuff on a weekend. Done and fine and ALL failed within a year! Good grief - that was a family member. Out to screw them - duh - I think not. Didn't charge anyway. Could talk thru the replacement again over the phone on that as the first round thing had been submerged in salt water needing some fussy work to get old races out/off axle.

Arggh - stuff happens,

Every shop I know puts mileage down on repair orders, so it will be clear to them when they pull this up that you have so little use of the bearings. If you were in my shop it would be fully covered, no questions asked. I have gotten duds even of better name hubs before. I think one only lasted a week and the customer was back. Others ran 6 months to a year. I always covered early failure as most any shop account parts are covered that far from the parts house and never wanted to lose a customer over it unless it was abvious tampering or abuse that caused the early failure.

Kind of odd that both rear bearings would go at or near the same time.

Why are they needing replacement? Are they making noise, loose?
