I have a 2003 Hyundai Elantra with a bit over 110,000 miles, automatic trans. and a relatively (i.e. 11 months old) starter.

Occasionally - maybe once every couple weeks, sometimes more often - the car won't start.

There appears to be plenty of power when the key is turned to the Acc. position - all of the dashboard lights, the power windows, the stereo, etc. all come on and are bright - but there is NO cranking at all when I attempt to start the vehicle. There are no noises coming from the engine bay. No clicks or other sounds which would lead me to believe there is any cranking. The weird thing is that, after we get the car towed or wait for a bit, the car will start with no problems. It continues to start fine for days following before randomly failing in the same way. It's so intermittent with no pattern. It will fail when hot/cold/whatever.

My mechanic has no clue what is going on because he says he can't reproduce the problem. Of course, it's deciding to start just fine now that we brought it to him.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on? This is driving me insane! Crazy

It's always tough when it won't act up at the shop, pretty much the same thing when you take your kid to the doctor. Then they always feel better....

I'm not sure of your abilities but when it's not starting you need to see if you are getting power down at the trigger wire of the starter solenoid. There should be 2 wires, a big one which is the battery cable and the a small one which is the trigger wire. That trigger wire needs to have 12v on it when the key is turned to the start position....

If that is a little too much for you could try giving the starter body a rap with a hammer when it's not starting. If hitting the starter gets it to work that would indicate the starter has a intermittent dead short & needs to be replaced....
