I have a 2003 Buick Century (no. . . I'm not an old geezer with wrap-around sunglasses) with 73,000 miles powered by 6 cylinders that is producing intermittant heat - after a very long time - and a fluctuating temperature guage. I called my mechanic thinking I needed a new thermostat but he seems to think the problem may be in the heater. He's taking a look at it tomorrow but I'd like to go into this with a little knowledge. Your thoughts?

Near certainly low coolant. The problem is why would it be low and it must be found out and known full at the radiator. This may not have direct access to check level at the radiator and the recovery tank alone is not enough when a problem exists like this. See what you can do to check level and add as needed with properly mixed coolant but still find out why if you do in fact find it low. Really helps if you can prevent overheating no matter what the cause right now,
