2002 focus died while driving Sign In

Hi everybody, I hope you can help me get some advice on this situation. While driving down the highway on friday afternoon, my radio turned off, and all my gauges stopped working. My speedometer, fuel, and temp needles fell to zero. My car continued to drive, but began to shudder. I figured it was a battery problem and I flicked my lights on to see what would happen. The car shuddered violently. I got off the highway and onto a residential street where my car totally died.

Here a nice man stopped to help me. He gave my car a jump and it started right up again. He kept his car hooked up to mine for a few minutes then directed me to a nearby repair shop. I barely made it to the shop when the car died again. I told the mechanic what had happened, and he installed a new battery for me. I drove to work and home with no more problems.

The next day, the car had the same problem and it died a third time. It gave the same symptoms, but the car ended up dying in the middle of an intersection.

I called the original repair shop again. I kind of expected then to take some responsibility for not fixing my car in the first place, but they did not. It seems to me that they sold me a battery I didn't need. Should I call the shop back and chew them out, or did they do the right thing? What do you think is wrong with my car?

Yes, you likely didn't need the battery. It sounds like the charging system is not working, likely due to a bad alternator. that's something they should have tested when you were there. They should have charged and tested the battery first.

I asked them specifically about the alternator and they said that it was fine. He told me my battery was dead, but that just doesn't make sense to me. A dead battery wouldn't be able to hold a charge from being jumped, would it? I would also think that if my battery was dead my car would not have started up in the first place, and I would never have made it to the highway.

If your battery had a charge in it, and IF you werent drawing to much power from the battery. The car would crank and run for a little bit without a current from the alternator

The car began experiencing problems about ten miles from home.

Just have the battery charged and the alternator tested.
