My 2002 Chevy Tahoe has 83,000 miles on it. Last Sunday, we were driving on the interstate when it acted like it was running out of gas. (there was plenty of gas). It then died. It was 106 degrees outside. Wouldn't start back up until we went back to check on it that night(after pumping the gas pedal). Then, it made it home (about 2 hrs) Have noticed it runs a little rough on idle. Chevy tech said this a.m. that the fuel pump needs replacing. We had it replaced once in 2005 before our warranty ran out. Could it already need to be replaced again?? A couple of days before it died, my husband and I noticed a small stream of smoke coming from the steering column.... at first we thought it was dust, but quickly realized to our surprise that it was smoke that lasted about 10 seconds... tiny little stream. Are there fuses in there?? Just want another opinion before we replace the pump AGAIN.Mad

It certainly is possible. Fuel pumps are the number one cause of "no starts" in late model GM vehicles. Tell him to m ake sure he changes or checks the connector at the pump because they have a known problem with voltage loss at those plugs causing premature pump failures.

Thanks for the advice... what do you make of the smoke stream from the steering column? Also, my husband has been driving the Tahoe since the incident and it has started up each time. Should we start with just a pump filter change and injector cleaning??

Smoke in the steering column is usually serious stuff. A short somewhere is melting wires. Any decent tech should be able to easily tell if there is any problem in there. I assume he has actually tested for power and ground at the pump before condemning it.

I'll have to ask my husband what all the tech said, all I know is that he hooked it up to the diagnostic machine.... It's at a GM dealership. He was told about the "smoke" and the tech said he couldn't find anything wrong in there. We told them to go ahead and change the filter, clean the fuel systems.. injectors, etc. can't afford the pump right now. Do you recommed a 2nd opinion?

No, the dealers don't usually make mistakes on things like that. You might want to shop the price though.

No, you can't but you may find a qualified independent shop that will do it cheaper. Just make sure they are using an OEM Delco pump.
