2002 NISSAN ALTIMA, CRANKS BUT WONT TURN OVER Sign In

2002 NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5L, 147,000 MILES

This problem began with what appeared to be hesitation when I would first start it in the morning. This was noticed approx 1 month ago, at his point we had the car taken to the shop and they stated they put it on the tester and it came back with a Cylinder 3 miss-fire and we were told that it could be a number of things. At that time we replaced all spark plugs and wires, got an oil change, and all the fluid topped off. We were also told that it could be the cylinoid, not sure if i spelled that right, the piece that goes over the spark plug, which we have not replaced because again they were not sure if that was the issue. At first when I would start it up in the morning, it would start but made the noises as if it was going to stall out, but it didn't. This went on for the past few weeks, until last friday when I went to start it, you can hear it cranking to turn over, but it will not completely turn over. We took out the spark plugs to look at them, and 1 out of the 4 appears to be more burnt that the others. At this time other than the spark plugs, we took out the battery and had it tested and it is still good, we found the fuel pump and found that it was working. We also had the fuel pressure checked, and it came back that the fuel line is good and getting enough pressure. We though that maybe the crank ignition sensor could be bad so we replaced that and it still wont turn over.

Just another sum of what I hear: I turn the key to start it and it cranks but won't I guess fire up to turn completely over. Please if anyone can help me figure this out, we would greatly appreciate it. We can't get it moved to have it put on a tester again because of the financial part. Need to know what we are dealing with so we can get it fixed.

Thank You

Usually the first thing you do with a computer controlled engine when it doesn't want to start is check for trouble codes in the engine computer. Not only does it help you if there are code(s) related to your symptoms, but it also tells you if the engine computer is alive and able to communicate with your code reader or scan tool.

If there are code(s) that are related, that gives you a direction to go for making checks.
If there are no code(s) or code(s) that aren't related, you have to resort to checking basics such as: checking for spark, fuel pressure, and injector activity during cranking.

You can't troubleshoot the problem until you figure out which system isn't working.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Cranking and turning over, in my jargon, are the same thing. From your description it sounds as if the starter is "hanging".

When you took the battery out, most likely, any codes that were in the computer re-set. Was the check engine light on at any time before the problem occurred? Have you tried spraying starting fluid in the air intake as someone turns the key? If it doesn't fire up, the next step would be a spark tester.

From your post it doesn't sound as if it's the timing belt, otherwise you would have had multiple random missfires.

A little more info and you may be able to nail this problem
