When I gas-up, the gas comes back-up & spills out. It's the middle of winter in Wisconsin & the mechanic said that the vent filter in the gas tank could be frozen? Is this possible or is it something else. Please let me know. Thanks.

Just a thought: Try some isopropyl dry gas - 1/2 at a time. We all need to use it now and then but NOT as often as the makers would tell you. Cold and water don't do well in fuel. The moisture can come and usually is from condensation NOT the gas station. - T

Thanks Tom for the advice! By the way, where do you get this "isopropyl dry gas?" Let me know.

It's sold as "Christys" in the black bottle or at almost any parts store and may just say "water removing" on the label. It's only a buck or so and the cheap stuff can be half that but isn't for any newer car. Napa sells 99.9% product and perhaps others.

It's almost a guarentee you'll have troubles if you don't use some once in a while - especially non garaged cars. The container will say use it all the time - bull! I drive cars from the 80's and about one bottle a year seems to have kept me out of trouble for decades. You'll find it - T

Re: 2002 Kia Sportage Sign In

Tom,

I have the same problem with the same exact KIA sportage 2002 and I am going to try your suggestion.

Something else has gone on with my Sportage recently and I plan to ride it out.

I have had the check engine light come on twice over the last two months and the first time a friend of mine checked it at his shop and said the gas cap was not tight enough. I drove it around about two weeks and then the light came on again. So I took it to a local KIA dealer and they came up with a bundle: They said I had clogged dirty c/c/v filter. A cloged canister (the one with charcole in it). F, T, P, S (short circuit), and all that would cost me $750.00. But if that didn't fix it then I could spend another $750 on a new gas tank and fuel filter.

I have drove the car about 90 miles since I left the dealership (without having any work done) and the engine light is gone. I have also filled the car up (ever so slowly) but the light has not come on. I went to autozone to have a PCM done and they found code 440. The first thing listed is the a faulty or defective gas cap, followed by, Evap Canister or hose cracked or not connected, purge vent solenoid defective and last the vacuum leak at engine.

With all this stated above I have experience no gas mileage loss, car is running normal etc. It is hard to determine what or who to believe.

I would consider springing for a new gas cap and stop at that if everything runs well and warning lights stay off.

What's with a new gas tank on a four year old car.!! I can buy a new one for other cars for as little as $90bucks and it just the metal only not hoses etc. Something does't smell right about needing that much work. Good luck, -T

jjuarez you should definetly take the kia to the dealers. my girlfriends sportage had the same problem i vermont during the winter a couple years ago. it is a known issue with a valve or filter in the tank. also make sure you tighten the gas cap alot or the pressure in the tank will make the engine light come on.
