2002
Hyundai
Sonata
2.7L 6cyl 4A
98,000 miles

My car is just out of warranty! I started it in the parking lot at the supermarket and something felt wrong, right away. I heard some noise and felt shaking so I turned the car off and waited. After a few minutes I started it again and began driving slowly. The car began to shake at low speed in drive and I felt it getting hot and thought it smelled funny. I was very close to home so I drove a bit further in the parking lot and then the Check Engine light came on so I parked it. Pulling into the parking space the shaking seemed to get worse the slower I went. Putting it in park the shaking stopped.

My dad decided just to drive the car home and he made it ok, less than a mile.

When I think about driving in the last month, two things stand out. During one drive I heard a quiet whirring/flapping noise inside the engine that seemed to stop at idle and then went away the next time I drove the car. I thought maybe a belt was coming loose or not aligned correctly.

Two days before the shaking, I drove over a speed bump in a neighborhood and car came down heavy off the bump. I wasn't going really fast but it just kind of boom/crashed down with some impact. It drove fine after that until the shaking.

The car is sitting in the driveway now with no warranty so I'm not sure what to do. I am not sure if it is safe to drive to get service. I don't know who to have work on it, or what might be wrong. I am guessing either engine mount, timing belt, balance belt or something like that. If there's anything I can check on my own to get an idea about the problem and if it needs to be towed, that would be a big help.

Thanks!
Beth

You say you felt it getting hot? What did the gauge say? Other than the check engine light, were any of the idiot lights coming on? You first noticed this with the engine running and the car not moving, right? That rules out this being a suspension or steering problem which would make it a danger to drive. The smell you noticed could be an indicator though. I want you to check all of your fluids and tell me which ones were low. If low, look for where it went. If you overheated from low coolant you need to fill it up and use a pressure tester to find your leak. You can check the motor mounts by having someone put it in gear with the brakes held firm and giving it a touch of gas. While they do that look at the mounts to see if they are moving around a lot. Slight movement is normal, but if the rubber is deteriorated it will move way too much and be easy to spot. Do these checks and tell me what you find.

I didn't notice any gauge problems while driving, but I was so nervous I might have missed something.

I checked the oil and it is low. Engine coolant is also low. I don't see any leaks or stains in the driveway. I had the oil changed about one month ago.

The one engine mount I could see looked intact. I did the test with tapping on the gas and the visible mount looked ok. The engine did briefly stop when the gas was tapped. Strange.

The CEL is on solid and not blinking. The car didn't feel hot or smell funny this time.

I am going to top up the oil & coolant tonight. Thanks for your help :) This is the first time I have ever tried this stuff. It's kind of fun.

Believe me it gets a lot more entertaining. Sometimes it gets down right unbelievable.

Well, I'm about to get my hands dirty! That's unbelievable part 1. If I can fix it myself (with your help of course) that's unbelievable part 2 :)

Ok, I topped up the coolant and the oil.

I made a point to look at the temp gauge when I started the car and it's flat on zero. It doesn't move when I start the car.

I guess I should have it towed to a service station, driving it would probably do more damage, right?
