I own a 2002 Ford Focus and it ran pretty well the entire time I had it (for about 2 years) despite its really high mileage of about 206,000 miles. I drove it from Colorado to Arizona and didn't notice it running weird at all. However, as soon as I arrived in Arizona and put my car into park it idled for about 5 seconds and then lost power. Ever since then, it has continuously died at slow speeds. The best way I can explain how it feels to drive it is that it doesn't completely shift into a higher gear, so when I release pressure from the gas, it dies. If I start accelerating (usually from 0-20 or even 30 mph), but then let my foot off of the gas, it will stall and then lose power. Also, it will feel like it's about to die sometimes if I am just idling at a red light and I'll have to put my left foot on the brake and use my right foot to slowly rev the engine or it'll die. When I go to start it, sometimes it'll start right up and seem fine (it's still only a matter of time before it starts falling out of gear and dies), but other times it will die so quickly I don't even have time to put it into drive. In this case I have to rev the engine while it's in park and very quickly shift into drive and hit the gas before it dies. I recently took it into an auto shop and spent more than $1700 in repairs. At the auto shop they replaced the fuel pump, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, engine air filter, fuel filter, and timing belt. However, I went to go pick it up and as soon as I turned it on it died like it usually does. They guys at the shop told me the computer just has to reset and it should fix itself after driving it for a while. It's been 2 weeks and I see absolutely no improvement in how it runs from before I took it to the shop. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I don't know how a reputable shop would do that. Customer brings something in for a problem. They sell him/her a bunch of stuff that doesn't fix the issue and then gives the vehicle back to the customer knowing the problem is still there. That to me doesn't sounds like a professional repair shop.

You can tell it isn't a fuel pump issue because once you get the engine rpm higher than idle speed, it runs fine. From your description it only seems to stall when your foot isn't on the gas, so that rules out fuel pump issue. No amount of computer resetting is going to fix that. Who ever told you that is full of it.

You probably have an idle air control system fault. Is this single or dual overhead cam?

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Yeah, I don't know much about cars so I feel like they took advantage of me. But I called and told them it still runs the same and they are having me take it back in tomorrow. I just wanted to get a second opinion before they try to charge me for anything else. I think it is SOHC because it's a SE model
