2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Starting Issue

A friend of mine said she needed her starter replaced and she already got a new one. So after completing the nightmare of a job that was(I've done probably 10 starters, usually an hour or so, this one took nearly 20), we tried to start it and it stil(same issue prior to replacing) does just one click, no turn over.
So we put a new battery in it. Still 1 click no start, no turnover. However, with the new battery, the battery gauge read just above low(No numbers on the gauge unfortunately). I hooked up my 2000amp jump box and it jumped to mid range, but still no crank, just a click.
I tested the relay, its good. I tested the crank, its not seized(a little resistance, could definitely use some oil, barely registering on dipshtick).
Only other thing I can think of is maybe the alternator?? I'm no master mechanic though, so I wanted to get some advice from someone that *actually* knows what they're doing rather than have her throw parts at it...
Any ideas what would cause this? If I hooked up the new starter incorrectly it wouldn't click at all right? I put the wires exactly where they were on the old one on the new one, to my recollection anyway. Not impossible I fudged that but. It clicks so I figured it's getting power/hooked up properly... It did have a wire on it that said "do not remove, crimp and heat shrink", but I removed it anyway bc it's the exact same gauge/connection as the existing wire so.
Anyway. Any suggestions or possible solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Time to start with the basics.
Remove and clean all the battery terminals with baking soda and a wire brush.

Check all the cable connections all the way to the ground and starter.

The next time you try to start it hook up a voltmeter across the battery first and observe what happens to the voltage when trying to crank it.
