Hello. I have noticed the last few weeks that my car will not accelerate after immediately stepping on the gas pedal. I would have to continue pressing down on the pedal before it finally moves. This may take about two to three seconds. This problem only occurs when I step on the pedal the first time after starting the car (and usually after the car has not been used for several hours--such as going to and from work). Afterwards as I drive, the car responds normally when I step on the gas pedal. I have no problem starting the car.
Any idea as to what the problem may be? I have 146,000 miles on her (75% of it is highway driving). I had the fuel filter replaced at 75,000 miles and I am probably due for another filter (plus a tune-up).

Fuel filter has to go just because and to rule it out. This will be tricky as you said it does this ONCE when starting off after a prolonged rest. For the moment I suspect the fuel pressure is a tad low for the short while. I also think that will need to be caught in the act which will be tough for even a shop as it might take a few days to catch it with pressure tester hooked up and a few tries to duplicate the trouble.
Fuel filter must go. Just up and get that done now and I suggest adding and periodically using by name a fuel solvent I like called Chevron's "Techron" .. These things are better for prevention than cure but I've absolutely noticed improvements using this product.
If that corrects the trouble put it on your "periodic" maint list. Solvent if it worked would take a while. If a fuel filter was the issue you would notice the next time you expect it to do this.
Just as a general habit, try to keep fuel from dropping below 1/4 tank. I know it stinks to stop more often but it does seem to help with the life of fuel pumps as they run a bit cooler.
