2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
V6 4.0 L
127,000 miles

I ran my jeep for a few hours back and forth about two miles in each direction to storage. The last run when i started the jeep the idle was a little shaky feeling. Went home and she drove okay. Drove about two more miles to the dump and saw steam coming out the hood.. pulled over and opened the engine and the resevoir holding the extra fluid for the radiator was boiling..literally boiling and spitting out water it was so hot...I let the car cool down and drove it back home and it was okay on the ride home. Any suggestions on what i should check or be looking for?

After it has cooled completely off the first thing to check is the coolant level. Check not only the level in the reservoir, but the radiator also. If there is a leak above the coolant level in the system, the system won't pull coolant from the reservoir. If it is low and hasn't boiled out, you may have a leak. Using a cooling system pressure tester can help you find leaks.

Also inspect your hoses for deterioration, check fan clutch for proper engagement, make sure that your elecrical fan is operating, and verify that there are no air flow obstructions in your condenser or radiator. Also be sure your radiator cap seals aren't cracked/hard and it is functioning correctly.

If all that checks good, be sure the thermostat is operational and opening at it rated temperature. You can tell when the thermostat is not functioning properly when the engine is up to operating temperature or higher and the lower hose is cold.

You continue driving it while it is cooking under the hood, you'll end up blowing a head gasket and/or cracking the head.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

checked the cooland level in both the radiator and the resevoir and both levels are fine. Took off the cap and started the car and the radiator level started rising so i guess the pumps working. I drove the car today and everything is fine, the tempature stayed at normal...gonna have a friend take a look at it and will let u know how it goes...thanks for the advice...
