01 grand prix 3.1 liter 200k miles - my daughters car she said the temp started climbing while driving 65 mph she pulled over added a half gallon coolant, then the temp kept climbing. I looked at it today and it does have some gunk in the coolant and I haven't flushed it yet as its on the side of interstate. I did change the thermostat, but I removed the rad hose just past the thermostat and had her start it and no fluid comes out while running ?? is this a bad water pump, and also it dies after it runs for 2-3 seconds ?? Any help is greatly appreciated.

That test doesn't work unless you get it hot enough to open the thermostat. The first step should be to pressure test the system for leaks. If she simply pulled over and added coolant, you can bet there is still air in the system so you have to find out where that coolant went. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

If you don't have any security indicators on or flashing when you try to start it, test the fuel pressure with an accurate gauge.

If there is a bleeder screw on top of the thermostat housing the air must be bled out of the housing once the system is filled. If not, overheating will occur.

And if there is no coolant in the car it will still overheat again until the leak is found and repaired so he should pressure test it first as already advised.

It's been nearly a month so I guess it doesn't matter.
