My 2001 VW Jetta TDI (173000km) gets stuck in park. It will eventually go into reverse or drive but it take several tries. I have replaced the park light sensor but that didn't seem to do it. Any ideas?

There’s a shift interlock system on this vehicle that forces us to step on the brake peddle before the shifter is allowed to come out of park. With the brake peddle applied power from the brake light switch is sent to the transmission control module (computer). The computer looks at all the prerequisites that must be met; if all are good. The computer then grounds the electrical circuit to the shifter lock solenoid; which in turn pulls a lever and unlocks the shifter. The first thing to check is to see whether the brake lights are coming on the next time the shifter will not come out of park. Next would be to get at the lock solenoid and see whether it is getting its power and ground, when the brakes are applied. After that you would need to check wiring and or the computer. Dan. The quality of the pictures are not the best but this one shows the brake light switch. This one shows the shifter; the is arrow pointing to the solenoid. Canadian "EH"
