2001 Toyota Echo, 1. 5L, 4 cyl, 4 door, 274,000 km

Car runs great but is using way too much fuel. I've been keeping a log since December and I'm averaging 9 miles/gallon (approx. 14km/liter).

Since October 2008, it's had 2 oil changes, 1 fuel injector purge, air filter change and spark plugs changed. The 2nd oil change was done as the mechanic said the oil was really dark. They checked the tires as well.
Aside from the driver and the passenger(s) there's nothing heavy that it is kept in the car on a regular basis. There are no visible leaks, nor is there an excessive gas odor. As well it is very difficult to put gas in it. I have to move the nozzle around alot until I find a spot that won't allow the gas to backwash up and out of the tank.
I welcome any and all suggestions as to what the car's problem may be.

Thank you.

Gingersnap; 9 mpg is hard to believe. If it is running that poorly, you should have a check engine lamp illuminated. If you do, you need to get the trouble codes read, immediately. You are getting about a third of what you should be getting. As far as weight, if you were hauling my mother-in-law around, I'd understand the drop in mileage.Unsure
Just to confirm: Fill your tank. Write down the current mileage. Drive the car until you need fuel again. Write down the mileage and note the number of gallons it took to fill. (Once the nozzle clicks off, don't put any more fuel in, ever). Divide the miles driven by the number of gallons it took to fill. That will give you the most precise mpg. You can do this several times in a row to get a pretty accurate average, depending on the type of driving that you do. If the engine is truly running this poorly (inefficiently), something is bad wrong. This is very detrimental to the engine, the catalytic converter, and your wallet.

Too add

You need to take it in and have the Evaporative Emission System tested to see why its so hard to add fuel.

This is just going to get worse until you wont be able to add at all

Click here...this will give you an idea what the EVAP system does.
