2001 Pontiac Aztec erratic idle

Hi all,
I'm having trouble tracking down a problem with this car. It will start and runs and drive well, but it has a very loud whistle and an erratic idle. It has a strong smell like it's running rich as well. I checked all the vacuum ports and line, they all response dedicated the same so I don't think that's the problem. I'm leaning toward egr valve, due to the sound location, but I'm at a loss. Any and all help would be appreciated.

scan for codes - free at many auto parts stores.... ESPECIALLY if eng light is off.
might try the old school vacuum leak check - BASICALLY carb spray any possible vacuum leak area a change in eng sound or RPM indicates a leak area..
