2001 Malibu engine runs hot

I just purchased a 2001 Chevy Malibu with 134,000 miles on it. When we test drove it, it ran perfectly fine. Driving it home a week later, after 10 minutes we noticed it was running very hot. What should we do?

Just how hot is it getting? Is it going into the red zone?
Is this mostly in low speed traffic type situations?
