2001 Ford Focus wont start Sign In

i have a 2001 ford focus. a few days ago i cranked the car and heard a "whining" noise that got louder as i pushed the gas pedal. the next day i tried to crank the car it wouldnt crank. it just clicked. i jumped it off and it was fine until i had to crank it again, then while sitting at a red light or going slow it would sputter and turn off and you cant crank it again, just clicks. i have had the battery and the alternator tested and they were both fine. any ideas what else it could be?

If you can jump it & it starts, you definately have a problem with starting system. Make sure the battery terminal are good & clean & may get that system retested. I don't know how it was tested but maybe something got overlooked.....

Sometimes its better to check the battery/alt/starter in the car. Out of the car test can find a problem but not always. If you have a volt meter you can see if it's charging. Start the car & at idle you should be see somewhere around 13.5 to 14.7 volts. Then turn on all the accessories (especially the rear window defroster if equipped) & see where the voltage drops to. If the alt is getting weak it may not be able to keep up with high demand.....

This problem could also be tied into your running problem, but even if it isn't you what this system in good working order before you move on to diag'ing the 2nd problem....
