Whenever I have to use my defrosters, my steering wheel feels like it locks up and turning a corner is almost impossible. It happens no matter what level I have the defroster on, and once I shut it off the steering gets back to normal. It seems like at times the steering is ok and then I can feel it start to get tighter until it's difficult to move the steering wheel at all. Also, on a regular day my steering wheel makes a very quiet popping sound that's almost like a tired shoulder joint on a person. When I had my brakes replaced I was told that the problem was my struts, but they could be replaced at a later time without any problems. Any advice (about the defroster problem or the struts) would be really helpful.

Thank you :)

Tricky one! Only thing right now that comes to mind is possibly the belt is too loose for any reason or wet perhaps (you tell me if that's a fogging windshield badly - things real wet??) and the added load of the blower for defrost and likely engagement of the A/C compressor is all vieing for the power the belt can deliver and the PS takes the hit you notice and slips.

Pay attention to the struts but I don't see the direct connection with defrost use and struts just yet??

http://www.autozone.com/.../repairInfoPages.htm That what Tom suggested or the device that is in the link above, there isn't that much linked between the defroster and the power steering.
