I have a 2001 Dodge Durango 4.7 L with just about 200,000 miles and it started acting up all of a sudden. Right now it will start sometimes, what I mean by that is the first time I try to start it, it starts. After that first try it will not start again, when I try to start it, it makes the sound of starting and then all of a sudden the motor slows down and it just shuts off. Also when I am driving it will shut off if I come to a complete stop. When it does start that first time an awful smell comes from the engine and also a noise, not a tick but like a scratch. Just a week or two before this started happening my Electric Radiator Fan went out but I was not too worried about fixing it right away because my stepdad (former mechanic, I know why don't I ask him for help, long story short he dosent want to) said that not fixing it will not harm anything as long as I do not have he AC on. A week after this started happening the check engine light came on (I haven't been driving it since this started) so I took it to Orylies and they said that the engine was too cold, and said that it had nothing to do with what was happening with the Durango. So my stepdad said that all the signs pointed to the PCM or a bad fuel pump, but he was sure it was the PCM. So I got a new ECM (he said it was the same thing and that it was fine) and had it installed by my local dealership and that solved nothing. Another thing he said was unimportant to this problem was that I have a cracked thing (sorry I forgot what it's called, here's a picture of it, the long tube in the middle of the picture with rust on the side) and it's leaking coolant, but only from there. So this is where I'm at, he's tellin me its a fuel pump if it was not the PCM, but he was sure it was the PCM so I wanted to get a second opinion.

I don't know who told you that ignoring an inoperative cooling fan was OK but that's the fastest way i know to destroying a motor.

So is my engine screwed, or can I replace the Electric Radiator Fan and it will start working again?

I have no idea what is going wrong with it now or if the fan problem is related. All I can tell you is that driving a truck with no cooling fan will lead to severe engine damage.

AN easy plan to get started-
Scan for codes even if light is off.....post ALL the codes they mention. We will interpret meanings for you.

Second thing you can do - is the security light on - do you have a remote starter?
Now some BASICS testing. FUEL INJECTION always check fuel pressure, then with KOEO observe pressure drop ie drops Xpsi in 5min.
Limit driving till the fan issue is checked

Camshaft position sensor in the front of the right cylinder head is a common
fix for dies while driving. Another issue is oil in the wiring harness from
a bad power steering pressure switch. See of the connectors at the PCM
are oily.
