2001 Chevy impala ABS problem

Ok thanks in advance for your help
Have a 2001 Chevy impala. Today, i was driving and heard a sound like the ABS was applying very very briefly and then the ABS light comes on and stays. I pulled over and turned the car off and then turned it back on. Everything seems normal for about 1 minute of driving and then it did it again. A very faint sound and then the ABS light comes on and stays on. ANY IDEAS??? I would greatly appreciate it.

I’m not saying this as a certain but GM has had a lot of problems with wheel speed sensor’s dropping out. I don’t mean actually falling off but the sensor dropping out its signal to the ABS module. When this happens it causes a false ABS activation; when the module cannot correct what it thinks is a possible skidding wheel; the module will turn off the system and turn on the light.
When you turn the vehicle off and then restart the module does a self-test doesn’t see a problem and allows the system to run. That’s until whatever wheel does its thing again.
You’ll need to have the system scanned to give you a direction to go in, as to find the actual problem.
The short wiring harnesses that leaves the wheel and goes to the main harness also have been a problem with intermittent bad connections. So be careful not to condemn a wheel speed sensor until the harness has been checked thoroughly.
If by chance this does turn out to be a wheel speed sensor, you’ll end up buying a wheel bearing assembly because the sensor is built into the hub.
