2001 Chevy Blazer Torque Conv Problem?? Sign In

I have a 2001 Chevy Blazer 4.6L V6 w/Auto Transmission with approx. 113,000 miles. It's a TrailBlazer trim level if that makes any difference.

For about a year I have been experiencing a randomly occurring problem. Out of the blue, usually around 60 mph, my car will feel like it stalls out or falls out of gear for a split second. Once it happens and I continue driving at high speeds it will continue to happen every minute or so - if I slow down to 40 or 45 mph, it stops. If I stop and turn it off for a few minutes and then start driving it again it usually goes away until the next random incident. I have gone a month or more without it happening and then had it happen every day for two or three days - it's unpredictable. It scares me every time - it really feels like the engine is going to fall out.

I could not get the problem to replicate itself for my mechanic so, based on my description of it feeling like it was stalling out for a split second, he tested my fuel pump and said it needed replacing. So I replaced it, along with the fuel filter and the fuel relay - $900...ouch. Everything was fine for three weeks and then it did it again yesterday while my daughter's boyfriend was driving it - up until now I am the only one who has experienced the problem. He seems to think it is either the transfer case or the torque converter. I could be led to believe that the problem is caused by the torque converter having difficulty engaging, especially since the problem happens only at higher speeds. I'm not having any noticeable issues with my 4-wheel-drive system, so I don't know that the transfer case could be the problem. I haven't noticed any shifting problems, lack of power, or any other problems - it's got a lot of miles on it though, so it's not super peppy. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. After spending over $900 on the fuel system repairs and then going three weeks without incident, I thought the problem was finally fixed. Now I'm frustrated all over again.

Thanks in advance!
Kelly

The next time it starts happening, drop your shifter down to #3gear instead of "D". This will eliminate overdrive and the torque converter lock up. If the problem goes away, then yes the torque converter solenoid or converter itself are the problem.

I had what seems to be the same problem with 02 blazer, wound up being a problem with the transfer case. It would just seem to jump into neutral at speeds of 60 or over , it only happened when you let off the accelerator. finally began at slower speeds. when you gave it more fuel it would kick back into gear. had the transfer case repaired and it cured the problem.
