2001 Cavalier - How do I reset the CPU Sign In

2001
Chevrolet
Cavalier
2.2L
270K (KM)

So, my internal dash lights won't work when I turn my headlights on... I get my odometer light on when the headlights are off, and my stereo lights as well, but when I turn my headlights on, they all go out (or in the stereo's case on min.)

Now, my Gas light comes on after about 7min of driving despite having a full tank of gas (the gauge still works, although my temp. gauge has gone inaccurate on me)

I want to reset the CPU... as I had some strange problems last year (my car beeped as if the car door was open when I hit 120km/h, and my keyless remotes stopped), and both of them were resolved when I accidently left the lights on... resetting the CPU

I don't want to kill my battery, so my Mechanic Uncle-In-Law told me that if I pushed the key forwards and left it in that position for 15 min the car's CPU would reset, but I did this for 20 and it didn't

Does anyone have any ideas on how this can be accomplished, or any other ideas? For the record I'm not very mechanically inclined, but I am willing to try/learn!

Thanks,

Sancty

Not always the same for all vehicles and or with certain equipment but disconnecting neg battery post for a good while should reset most everything. It may need something left on (like parking lights) while disconnected to assist complete memory loss as far as that can do.

AYOR - that can cause issues with remotes, radio, alarms or other items,

Sorry about that - acronyms will be the demise of human kind!

A.Y.O.R = At - Your - Own - Risk

I said that for this suggestion because occasionally disconnecting a battery without purposely using a "memory saver" can cause havoc with alarms, stereos and some car's computer need a time period to "re learn" and may run funky for a while so you would take them for a drive. Same things can happen if battery goes dead on you too for any reason.

Things that are relying on vehicle's residual power to remember things if permanently installed most likely will forget such as radio presets, clock, etc. Don't know what you may have in this car aftermarket or original equipment (OE) that would be affected - that's all,

T
